The Bounty
The Bounty
Titled Between the Lines- the Bounty, I made this bag for the 2024 Eiteljorg Museum’s Indian Market competition. I was thrilled to receive a third place ribbon in traditional beadwork there and a second place ribbon with it t the Cherokee Indian Market in 2024 as well. It includes a scissor case, a bead bag, an awl case, and thread case and a thimble case. The bag contents are meant to keep a beawrokers tool safe and in good working order, but there is more to the story, this is the Artsist Statement for this piece.
Between the lines – the bounty.
I was inspired to create this hair on calf bag with sewing bag accessories after recently hearing about my great great grandparents moving camp run in with the law.
Our people traveled back-and-forth from Red River Canada to the Milk and Missouri rivers in Montana frequently being chased/forced across the border we couldn’t recognize. On one such trip with Buffalo nowhere to be found and the young men out hunting my grandmother and other women in my family butchered some cow calf pears to feed their family a letter from a local US marshal to his superior, stated he saw them quickly butchering and tanning the their rewards I imagined when rushed, they have left the hides hair on the design on the bag influenced by the frequent photos, I take of accumulated Burwick on my workbench usually just prior to a show. I tightly group work for these pics and started calling them. My ““ bead bunches I wondered what an intentional bead Bunch might look like so the bounty my grandmother experienced seems familiar like a bounty of beadwork she was between the lines borders created by men who tried so hard for so long to eliminate us, but we are still here. This was my grandmother Carolyn Cook her husband was Joe plumber. All of the people in the camp were arrest arrested. It was six men 11 women 33 children 39 ponies 34 carts three spring wagons seven men were out hunting Lieutenant J Bell was who the letter was Two in Fort Union
